Imagine your boss asking you to describe your idea for a project. Imagine your toddler asking you to tell a bedtime story. Imagine your friend asking what happened at the party
on Saturday. Do any of these sound like scenarios you’ve experienced or might encounter in the future?
Being able to tell a story and describe an experience is a skill that will help you personally and professionally. This assignment will give you the opportunity to tell a story about
yourself or describe a person or place that has impacted you. You will practice brainstorming for ideas, organizing your thoughts, and using descriptive language to “show, not tell”
your own experience.
Prompts:
Choose ONE of the following options:
• Narrative: Tell the story of an experience that caused you to change a previously held belief, attitude, or position. Your story should include a conflict, detail and description,
and a point (the significance of your narrative).
• Narrative: Write a literacy narrative about your experience with language. This could be a story about learning to read, an experience with a specific book or class, a story
about yourself as a writer, or your experience learning a new language or dialect.
• Description: Describe a place that has had an impact on you as an individual. Be sure to use imagery and concrete details to convey a sense of place.
• Description: Describe a person who has had a significant impact on your life (this can be positive or negative). Use imagery, concrete details, and dialogue to describe this
individual.
Requirements
Your essay should:
• be formatted in MLA (12 pt. font, double-spaced) with an MLA header, heading, and creative title. Watch this video for instructions on formatting a paper in MLA.
• fully address one of the prompts above
• be written in the first person (I, me)
• be organized into paragraphs
• include 3D: detail, description, and dialogue
• make the significance of your narrative or description clear
• be 2-3 pages long
• not include sources other than your own experience (no research required!). If you do include any words or ideas from another source, you must indicate the source with
