Your midterm will be based off the case study Barriers to Intercultural Communication – A Case Study on IKEA Japan. Pages 18-34 will have the most valuable information for you. You do NOT need to read the whole case to write a good paper, but the rest of the case might provide you with some helpful information.
You are expected to write your midterm paper in Times New Roman font, size 12. Your paper must be 800 words OR MORE.
If ChatGPT writes your essay, you will lose 90 points. This will be very detrimental to your final grade. These are the items you should cover in your paper:
Case analysis: (50 points total)
Summarize the case (10 points)
Choose 2 or 3 concepts from what we have studied to highlight in the case (culture, stereotypes, etc.) (20 points)
How do these concepts play a role in the case? E.g., stereotypes make communication harder/easier (20 points)
Reflection and Application: (50 points total)
Apply course concepts: how can the issues in the case be avoided? (15 points)
How could a better understanding of intercultural communication improve the situation? (15 points)
Cultural Competence Insights:
What is one way you can become better at understanding/communicating with other cultures? (10 points)
What is the benefit of understanding intercultural communication both in this case and in general? (10 points)
It is important to cite your sources if you quote the case study or any other resource you use. Failure to do so will cost you 10 points.
