Part 1: Portfolio of information

To complete this part of the assessment, you are to prepare and digitally present a presentation of information for a simulated staff development session (this information will only be used for the purpose of this assessment) at a new community service facility that has opened, and you have started working at.

You are to develop this presentation for the staff to ensure the facility demonstrates cultural safety whilst working with the community. The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate your understanding of the content.

The portfolio of information is to be presented in a PowerPoint presentation or other form approved by your assessor, with audio commentary.

During each presentation, you should:

  • Present yourself in a professional manner
  • Demonstrate positive and effective communication.

Staff development:

Your manager has asked you to prepare an information session/staff development for the team working in your section of the organisation (Children Services, Community Services, or the health team). You have been asked to develop the session on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Safety within your service delivery section and build partnerships with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Your presentation must include:

  1. A PowerPoint presentation of 15 – 20 slides
  2. Including audio commentary

The information session must include the following information:

  1. A brief overview of the culture and history of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, where they work/or live.
  2. Identify three possible impacts of cultural factors on service delivery to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients.
  3. Identify two critical issues that impact relationships and communication with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities
  4. Identify three key aspects of cultural safety and its relationship to Cultural awareness/Competence.
  5. Identify three strategies the service could use to be culturally safe, including how staff are supported to identify their own cultural bias.
  6. Discuss how you would evaluate the three strategies that the service can implement and integrate cultural safety. Ensure you include how Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people will be involved in evaluations.
  7. In evaluating these strategies, provide two ideas for enhancing cultural safety within the service.
  8. Identify three resources the service could use to promote partnerships and be culturally safe.
  9. Identify ways to support the delivery of services and programs that are culturally safe and encourage increased participation, include information of how this information can be captured and measured.
  10. Include how these strategies will work with local industry and to encourage self-determination and community control in services and programs.
  11. Discuss the process you would undertake to revise the strategies suggested based on feedback you receive from your local community.
