important note

There are TWO (2) options to complete the management project.  You only need to choose ONE (1) option.

OPTION 1: In your role as a manager you are required to conduct management research for an identified business need or challenge for an organisation you know well or have researched.

OR

OPTION 2: Basing your response on ONE (1) of the scenarios shown below, you may carry out an academic enquiry relevant to the identified business need or challenge.

»

scenario a

You have been asked to lead a stakeholder group that has been formed to review the services and support given to customers.  It is a challenging remit as there is a likelihood that services will need to be cut or changed.

The group comprises of internal and external stakeholders. This includes two team leaders who are based off-site, a finance officer, an equalities officer, a representative from the senior management team and three customers.  There is also representation from a national consumer group who attend to represent customer interests.

The review of services and support given to customers must be completed within a six month period.

»

scenario B

Staff turnover within your organisation has been a constant issue over the past three years. People have been leaving for a number of reasons. Those leaving include those who have been long term staff members as well as staff who have been employed for less than three months.

A group has been formed to look at potential strategies, which could be used to retain talent and improve retention, and you have been asked to lead this group.

»

scenario C

You have just been appointed as the customer services manager for an organisation, which makes a range of luxury products.

The organisation currently operates as a trade only supplier, however the senior management team has been considering the option of launching a new product line, which could be sold to the public via retail outlets and online.

Research is required into the impact of this move for the customer services department.

»

scenario D

You work for a large manufacturer. Its primary market is in the UK but it also sells to European based companies and the US. It has a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including staff, customers, business functions, departments, shareholders, partners, regulators and suppliers.

The company has various strategic business units and departments including a design shop, distribution centre, workshop, administrative and management centre and a customer service centre.

The company has built a reputation for high quality products and is now looking to improve the quality of service offered by other departments.

»

scenario E

You have been engaged as a consultant by a small business that has seen a significant growth in sales over the past year.

The business has had to employ a number of permanent staff for the first time.

To date the business has operated informally with a number of associates, who were friends of the owner helping out during busy periods.  However, with the growth in sales and the arrival of permanent staff members, the owner has asked for guidance on ways of organising the business more formally without losing flexibility and the ability to adapt to changes in demand.
