Before beginning this discussion, please make sure you have watched my tutorial for Chapters 5-8. If you already have, then you may officially begin this discussion. After reading Part I, Chapters 5-8 of 1984, I would like you to complete this discussion. Please answer the five questions below specifically and analytically. I would like our discussion to be very focused, so please follow along these steps:
Step #1: Answer ONE out of the five questions below, which are on Chapters 5-8 of 1984. Make sure you are answering the question with support from the novel and with insightful analysis.
1. Winston wonders if he is “alone in the possession of a memory.” What sorts of details is he remembering from the past that makes him feel like an outcast from other citizens of Oceania? (52). Give two examples. What makes these memories credible/trustworthy?
2. Explain why the Party controls sexual intercourse? What is their purpose and why? (57). Analyze thoroughly and specifically.
3. What does Winston mean when he expresses, “If there is hope…it lies in the proles”? (60-62). Analyze specifically (give at least one textual example).
4. How does the Party represent capitalism and why? Identify what fallacies you notice in the Party’s description of capitalism (62-63). Explain at least one of those fallacies (quote from the book here). Also, do you agree with the Party’s vision of capitalism? Why or why not?
5. Analyze Winston’s words: “I understand HOW: I do not understand WHY” (68). What is Winston so confused about and why is this important? Be specific.
