For the final assignment in this course, all students will develop a formal Group Proposal, developing an eight-week (eight session) psychoeducational group therapy program, focusing on the treatment of either an identified substance use disorder and/or process addiction. Each student will develop a written Group Proposal (due Session 6). Additionally, each individual will record a video presentation of their proposed group, to be shared with the rest of the class (due Session 7).
By the end of Session 4, please complete the following:
Submit the first part of your Group Project Proposal, including the following elements:
Purpose: Briefly state the purpose of your program in one or two sentences (i.e., This program is designed to…)
Population: Be specific. Tell whom the group is being developed for. Include the age range of group members, gender, developmental aspects, and identifying criteria. Do not include material from the theoretical approach.
Rationale: What is the focal problem? Define and explain. Why is there a need for some form of treatment for this population and problem? Why is this group approach a more viable form of treatment than individual?
Theoretical Approach: What approach(es) will you use in your program? Be specific. Why is your choice a good one?
Recruitment: How will you “get the word out” about your group?
Screening: How will you select (or de-select) members for your group? Indicate any format you will use. Include copies of any pre-tests, intake forms, or any other forms in the Appendix.
Structure: State the time and day, duration (# of hours), open/closed format, and frequency of the group meetings. Include the size of the group and where you suggest this group should meet.
Goals: What are your goals for this group? It is important that you have goals in mind before you organize the group. Indicate whether you want members to suggest goals for the group in addition to your own goals. Do not copy from the text.
