What is policy? It is any written plan or course of action designed to influence and determine decisions.
What is an intervention? Interventions are actions that community/public health take on behalf of individuals/families, communities, and systems, to improve or protect health status.
Interventions and policies should be designed to prevent and control health problems. They should be scientifically based according to facts and data from epidemiologic research and from knowledge about previous interventions and studies. The nature of the intervention will depend on the type of problem involved, its cause, and the causal mechanisms involved. In addition, two-way communication between government agencies and the public is expected and may be required for the intervention to be successful (Goodman, Fontaine, Hadler, & Vugia, 2008).
Your assignment is to analyze a public health policy and/or intervention(s) for one of the following topics; tobacco sales or use, alcohol, firearms, motor vehicle related, bicycle helmet use, control of infectious disease, or food and nutrition. (You may select another topic if instructor approved). There are examples of laws, policies, and interventions in your textbook (particularly Chapter 10) and readings that are provided. You cannot choose any of those discussed in your textbook for this assignment. Critique the policy, law, and/or intervention.
You will also look at the current research literature on your topic as a public health problem to determine if this policy, law, or intervention is evidence-based. Below are some questions you should be asking yourself when you are looking over the policy, law, or intervention and the research. You have covered types of study designs in epidemiology, so you should have an understanding of types of studies to review for this activity. You should find at least two articles from professional journals and at least one source of data from a professional public health organization, agency, or registry (e.g. Healthy People 2020, American Public Health Association, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute of Health, Department of Agriculture, and many others).
You must write in complete sentences and in paragraph form. Write two pages critiquing the policy, law, or intervention including information related to the questions below. You must cite all sources in APA style, within the body of your paragraph and in a reference list at the end of your paper. Your goal is to write a one paragraph overview of a policy, law, or intervention supporting your perspective and assertions about the effectiveness of the policy/law/intervention with evidenced based research (30-points). You must then write two pages that discuss your recommendations for making changes to the policy/law/intervention regarding the information or stance that you have selected (30-points).
You must also design (with art and text) TWO educational infographics or brochures- one appropriate for laypersons (you choose the target population from the general public- all adults, youth, males, females, teens or other) to educate about the risk to health related to the topic, and the other should inform an appropriate target group about the policy itself (e.g. purpose, strategies, regulations, enforcement, who it applies to, or any other important information you think of). Do not find and copy infographics or brochures, but you may use a good one as an example. You can find free infographic tools on line by doing a simple Google search (40 points).
