To develop an awareness of the major disorders which affect children and adolescents, their aetiology, and issues of early detection, intervention and prevention

This module will be delivered primarily face to face through a mixture of lectures and interactive workshops where students will participate in discussion activities and debates. Appropriate pre and post class activities will be provided as necessary per week via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Students are asked to check in advance whether there is any work to complete prior to the week’s class. Attendance at all lectures and engagement with all learning materials is expected as laid out in the programme handbook.

To consider the role of the family (e.g., parents, and siblings) and significant others (peers, educational practitioners) in the assessment, maintenance, intervention and treatment of child and adolescent disorders

To promote awareness of the ethical and professional issues involved in working with children, adolescents and their families

To consider the contribution of psychological research to informing clinical and related practices (e.g., in education, social work, family services etc) when working with children, adolescents and their families

Critically evaluate the aetiology of disorders occurring in childhood and adolescence

Critically evaluate and apply psychological research, theory and methodology to the assessment of child and adolescent disorders

Critically evaluate and apply psychological research, theory and methodology to the treatment of child and adolescent disorders

Critically appraise the role of the family, educators or peers in the treatment of child and adolescent disorders
