Step 1: Read a total of FIVE interview transcripts (two can be your own, try to randomly select the other three from the discussion board). Step 2: Code the data (be sure to complete this week’s readings and listen to the lecture video to better understand how to do this) and make memos. I highly recommend printing the transcripts and using colored pens/pencils/highlighters/crayons for coding, but you can also use highlight/bold/underline tools in Microsoft Word to complete this digitally. Scan/take snapshots of your paper coding or save the files if electronically coding. You will be uploading these. Step 3: In a separate Word document, list all the codes you identified and provide a brief description of the meaning (conceptualization) of each code. This can be a bulleted list. You will probably have 8-20 codes, depending on your process and the interviews you read. Remember, there is no “right” or “wrong” way to do this. Do you best. TRY to have completed some of your codes by Wednesday, as we will be discussing them further in class. Step 4: You can then use Wednesday’s class discussion to complete the final step of selective coding. This is where you will go back through the five interviews you read and look for examples that confirm or disprove (negative cases). Note examples of these on your word document for each code. These can be sub-bullet points. TIPS: Try not to overstress about this exercise. This is only worth 10 points, a typically weekly activity. I want you to focus on the process and less so on the product you will be turning in. I know your coded transcripts will look messy, that’s 100% okay. Cap yourself at three hours max on this assignment (one for steps 1 & 2, another for step 3, and the last for step 4). Do your best to quit when the time is up!
