Part 1

·        Review Chapter 1—specifically the discussion of developmentally appropriate practice on page 13—and take and reflect on the short Learning and Teaching inventory on pages 6–7.

·        Consider the variety of influences on a child's development.

·        Think about how these influences affect the child's approach to learning and how they affect the educator's approach to teaching.

There are multiple influential factors on child development to consider when addressing a student's needs, for example, family make-up, the region of the country they live in, whether they live in an urban or rural area, life experiences, and language exposure.

Post an analysis of the types of influences on a child's development that addresses the following points:

·        As a teacher, how would you approach each child differently?

·        Provide at least one example or action to demonstrate you know each student as an individual.

·        How might your approach and actions differ in a virtual classroom versus a physical one?

·        Include at least one question to your peers regarding influential factors on which you would like clarification or a new perspective.

Be sure to cite support statements from the Learning Resources.

Part2

TO PREPARE

·        Review both the McLeod (2007) and the Fehr (2016) articles regarding nature versus nurture.

·        Consider factors of everyday life and how these factors fall into the area of nature or nurture.

·        Which factors might not fit perfectly into only one of the categories?

·        The nature versus nurture controversy continues to be a "hot topic" in education. After reviewing the Learning Resources for this week, create your own theory on what you believe strongly affects development and learning (2–3 paragraphs).

o   What are your beliefs regarding the nature versus nurture controversy?

o   How do you believe this theory influences development?

o   Be sure to cite support statements you use from the Learning Resources.

·        Many external factors play a role in child development. Consider the following factors, and discuss how these may play a part in child development (2–3 paragraphs for each of the following sub-bullets):

o   Family

o   Community

§  Rural, suburban, or urban

§  Region of country or world

§  Specific local-community customs

o   Cultural diversity (race, religion, and ethnicity)

o   Socioeconomic

o   Drug or alcohol use during pregnancy or in the home

Part3

In this Discussion, you consider a moral dilemma more serious than just an old wallet. One would hope the majority of the population would try to do the right thing, but our decisions become clouded when the stakes are high.

·        Review the Learning Resources for this week.

·        Review the stages of Kohlberg's developmental theory in the course text and in the McLeod article on Kohlberg.

·        Review the Kohlberg video and the course text. Consider this prompt and the questions. Share the scenario with someone and ask them the questions. Reflect on their response and the discussion that may have come after the initial response.

o   Heinz's wife is dying from a particular type of cancer. Doctors say a new drug might save her. The drug was discovered by a local chemist. Heinz and his wife try desperately to buy some but the chemist is charging 10 times the money it costs to make the drug, and this is much more than Heinz and his wife can afford.

Heinz only raises half the money, even after help from family and friends. He explains to the chemist that his wife is dying and asks if he can have the drug cheaper or pay the rest of the money later.

The chemist refuses, saying that he discovered the drug and is going to make money from it. The husband is desperate to save his wife, so later that night he breaks into the chemist's laboratory and steals the drug.

§  Should Heinz have stolen the drug?

§  Would it change anything if Heinz did not love his wife?

§  What if the person dying was a stranger, would it make any difference?

§  Should the police arrest the chemist for murder if the woman dies?

·        Read the limitations of the study in the Kohlberg article (McLeod, 2013a) and the research information in Chapter 1 of the course text to help us understand learning and teaching by allowing us to explain and predict our students' behavior and how our actions will influence learning. How can Kohlberg's theory help you predict behavior and actions?

Post your reflections after sharing the scenario with someone else. Consider how their response fits in with Kohlberg's stages of moral development. This study was originally conducted on 10- to 6-year-old boys.

Part4

For this Assignment, you seek to understand the theories presented by Bronfenbrenner, Erikson, Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, Pavlov, and Froebel. It is not only important to understand the facts of each theory, but also how these theories can play a significant role in your approach to teaching.

Review the Child Developmental theories, in Chapters 2 and 3 of the course text and the Learning Resources, outlining each of the child developmental theories.

·        After reviewing the findings of Bronfenbrenner, Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson, Kohlberg, Pavlov, and Roebel, create a graphic organizer that addresses the main ideas and significance of each theorists’ work. You may use the "Theories of Child Development” handout in this week's Learning Resources, or you may create a graphic organizer of your own using an online tool of your choosing.

·        Summarize the main ideas of each theory, and describe why each theory is helpful to an educator trying to understand the theory. Discuss the "why" in the significance column of the graphic organizer. Include at least three sentences to describe each theory. You can refer to this graphic organizer in future courses and professional exams.

·        Include with your graphic organizer a reference list and in-text citations if appropriate
