Assignment Task

Students are required to answer one of the following:

  1. Power operates in various ways in society. To what extent do we see these operations of power in everyday Australian society? Are these dynamics of power necessary for the continued flourishing of our society or are they detrimental to freedom? Why?
  2. How, and to what extent, can a diverse society containing various conceptions of the good enact justice?
  3. According to Spengler, Western civilisation is in a stage or irreversible decline. Do you think that his ideas are warranted or is this an overly fatalistic outlook? Support your answer by engaging in Spengler’s concerns and providing reasons as to why he is or isn’t correct.
  4. Supporters view Catholic Social Teaching and Virtue Ethics as an alternative to predominant political, social and moral frameworks. Are they justified in this belief? Why/Why not?

This is an argumentative essay in which you propose an answer to the chosen question, and provide several detailed reasons why you think so. Unlike the other two earlier assessment tasks, with this essay you are required to engage more deeply with the topic in part by undertaking some independent research. In particular, you should consult and discuss at least four (4) peer- reviewed sources in addition to the prescribed readings. Alongside this outside research, your essay must also contain evidence of independent thought, where this involves developing and justifying your own position or point of view (rather than merely ‘asserting’ it).
