Part1 Components of Social-Emotional Learning Your Reading this week discussed interventions for helping students with EBD achieve social-emotional learning goals and become successful independent learners. In your post, answer the following: Identify the social and emotional characteristics typically exhibited by students experiencing EBD and explain why it is necessary to build their social-emotional competencies. Describe the characteristics of a trauma-sensitive classroom and analyze why this environment provides a successful learning experience for students with EBD. Explain how you would to help students with EBD overcome deficits in social-emotional skills, experience academic success, and become self-directed learners. Part 2 Topic 2: Researched-Based Interventions Researchers have examined successful strategies for supporting students experiencing EBD in the classroom. They have found that changing behavior requires more than the behavior modification strategies. Research has identified cognitive-behavioral interventions (CBI), social skills development training, and insight-oriented interventions as evidence-based practices that are effective in supporting students with social-emotional deficits. Successful interventions combine both training to address cognitive deficits and instruction on strategies to reduce behavioral deficits. Address the following in your response: Explain how students’ thoughts, perceptions, and self-talk influence their behavior. and how the cognitive-behavioral approach supports social-emotional learning and competence. Think about a classroom situation you have observed or a hypothetical situation in which a student with EBD struggled with social-emotional competence. You may focus on a student you have previously taught, one you have observed in a school setting, or visit the IRIS Center to conduct a search for a student. Choose ONE of the following Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions that you would use with this student to support his/her social and emotional learning needs and explain the interventions you would implement in the classroom. Self-Monitoring Self-Instruction/Self-Talk Social Skills Development Goal Setting Behavior Contracts Discuss any legislative mandates at the federal, state, or local level that address using Cognitive-Behavioral strategy you chose to meet the social and emotional needs of students with EBD. Find a peer-reviewed journal article that identifies other strategies you could use to support the social-emotional competence of this student.
