1. Learning disabilities are conditions that cause a discrepancy between an individual’s potential and their actual academic performance, as measured by their intellectual capabilities. These disabilities can manifest as difficulties with attention, concentration, language development, or processing visual and auditory information.
Additionally, learning disabilities are lifelong and can have a significant impact on personal relationships, daily activities, and, ultimately, professional life and career advancement.
a. What is dyslexia and what causes it? (10 marks)
b. Describe the signs and symptoms of children with dyslexia for early identification. What are the roles of parents and teachers in supporting children with dyslexia. (15 marks)
2. Multisensory approaches have always been recommended as effective teaching methods for children with learning disabilities, especially dyslexia. Orton-Gillingham and other researchers have suggested methods and programs of instruction that use as many channels of input to the learner as possible. Choose ONE approach that has been discussed in the lessons and describe how this approach could help a child with dyslexia in their learning. (10 marks)

He often has trouble adjusting to new routines, environments, and people, which leads to heightened anxiety. Additionally, Adam struggles with transitions between different activities throughout the day. As his teacher, using the TEACCH approach, you are tasked with illustrating a 5-day visual schedule to help Adam better familiarize himself with the school routine. This schedule will serve as a reference for him, supporting his ability to adjust to the school environment. Alongside the daily schedule, it would be helpful to introduce Adam to key aspects of the school, such as the layout, his teachers, and a peer buddy, to help him feel more prepared before the school year begins.
