Introduction In an effort to help you “evaluate the impact of new patterns of policymaking surrounding the construction and interpretation of legislative language and their impacts on the overall functioning of American separation of powers,” this assignment asks you to improve the dominant models of the policy process by adjusting existing figures/schematics to accommodate the new realities of the policy process known as “adversarial legalism.” Chronicling these changes and assessing their impacts will allow you not only to appreciate these changes but also to begin to “assess the challenges these new patterns pose for policymaking in the contemporary American political system.” Directions Examining typical figures that model the policy process in the American political system (provided by me in the attached document), you should re-design the schematic of the policy process to reflect the additional procedural elements known as “adversarial legalism.” Design a new “model” or “figure” or “schematic” of the policy process in light of these changes and graphically represent those changes in a PowerPoint slide. In addition, applying your schematic to one particular policy area, write a brief 1-2 page paper that identifies the various actors in the process (both inside and outside of government) likely to seek and wield influence. What influence do they seek to wield and where (among the various elements of the process) are they most likely to be successful? This paper should make reference to the schematic/figure that you created and discuss the strategies and objectives of a variety of political actors (at least two each inside and outside of government).
