Intimate Partner Violence
On January 4, 2023, it is believed that 42-year old Michael Haight murdered his mother-in-law, his wife, and their five children, before turning the gun on himself in their home in Enoch, Utah. Just two weeks prior to the killings, Haight’s wife had filed for divorce. Also, Haight had previously been investigated for domestic abuse allegations by their eldest daughter. Could this tragic case of intimate partner violence have been prevented? What more could have been done?
Sometimes, in situations of intimate partner violence like the Haight case, the victims may exhibit counterintuitive behaviors, such as enabling or protecting their abuser. They may act against their own best interests, out of love or devotion, fear or self-blame, or other reasons like to maintain religious ideals or community approval. If, for example, a victim is not willing to report the abuse, press charges, or testify against the perpetrator for whatever reasons, it becomes that much more difficult for forensic psychology professionals and the criminal justice system to successfully do their jobs
Identify a real-life intimate violence crime case in which the victim(s) exhibited counterintuitive behavior or acted against their own best interest.
Conduct your own research online and/or in the Walden Library to identify three or more credible sources of information/evidence (e.g., court documents, documentaries, journal articles, news reports, etc.) about the case you selected.
Consider how the counterintuitive behavior by the victim(s) may have influenced the case.
Consider how the victim(s)’ behavior may have created challenges for the forensic psychology professionals and/or the criminal justice system working on the case.
Consider how, as a forensic psychology professional, you would have navigated the complexities of the case.
Identify the intimate violence case you selected.
Provide a brief summary of the case.
Explain how the victim(s) in the case exhibited counterintuitive behavior or acted against their own best interest.
Explain how the victim(s)’ behavior may have created challenges for the forensic psychology professionals and/or the criminal justice system working on the case.
Explain how, as a forensic psychology professional, you would have navigated the complexities of the case.
