After you discuss the questions, you will write the answers individually in your own words and upload the assignments to Blackboard individually. Working with your group members to answer these questions and completing the assignments will be counted as your in-class assignment grades. In-class assignments will be graded based on completion. You are expected to show work with your best effort to get full credit. Each in-class assignment will be graded as 10 points. Please, after you complete your assignment, upload it to Blackboard.

1) Identify the independent variable, the levels of the independent variable, and the dependent variable in the following research descriptions:

a.      Researchers were interested in examining whether doing yoga practices or running would affect happiness. College students either did yoga practices or ran before taking a happiness test. Happiness was measured.

b.     Researchers were interested in examining whether the verbal memory performance of adult humans who drank green tea would be better than those who drank peach tea. College students were randomly assigned to either the green tea condition or the peach tea condition. Verbal memory performance was measured.

 

c.      Researchers were interested in examining the effect of room size on academic achievement. College students were randomly assigned to either a big or small room. Academic achievement was measured.

 

2) Identify the strength and the direction of the following correlation coefficients:

c.  r= +.88

 

 

3)  In a hypothetical study, I hypothesized that individuals who wore compression workout shorts would have lower heart rates immediately after a high-intensity workout compared to those who wore standard workout shorts. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group wore compression shorts during their workout, while the other group wore standard shorts. Heart rate was measured immediately after the workout for both groups. The results showed that participants wearing compression shorts had lower heart rates than those wearing standard shorts.

4) Imagine you are a researcher who is analyzing shoe consumption at a larger sneaker company. Write your hypothetical research description based on an experimental research design for this scenario:

 

Example research description: As a researcher, in a hypothetical study, I examined whether the type of shoe cushioning affects comfort levels. In this experiment, participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group wore shoes with advanced cushioned insoles, while the other group wore shoes with standard insoles. Comfort levels were measured immediately after participants walked a set distance. Results showed that participants who wore shoes with advanced cushioned insoles reported higher comfort levels than those who wore shoes with standard insoles.
