Unit Outcomes:

  • Complete an SDS/MSDS for hazardous materials in the workplace.
  • Define the types of hazardous materials in the workplace.
  • Discuss the importance of recognizing hazardous materials in the workplace.
  • Explain why SDS/MSDS forms should be available for all hazardous materials.

Purpose

Hazardous materials are substances that pose a risk to health, safety, property, or the environment. These materials can be found in nearly every workplace, from cleaning chemicals and solvents to industrial gases and flammable liquids. Understanding what qualifies as a hazardous material and how to safely manage it is critical to maintaining a safe work environment. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates that employers provide information, training, and protective measures to minimize employee exposure to hazardous substances.

Recognizing potential hazards is essential to prevent injuries, illnesses, and environmental damage. When workers understand how to identify hazardous substances and follow safety procedures, they are more likely to avoid chemical burns, respiratory issues, and long-term health complications. Proactive hazard recognition also ensures compliance with safety regulations and helps organizations avoid costly legal penalties.
