Background Information:

Research has revealed a high prevalence of consumers with a comorbid diagnosis. Research has also highlighted the complexities and challenges of caring for this group of consumers. The purpose of this assessment is to assess your ability to critically assess and examine treatment options for a consumer who presents with complex mental health needs.

Task:

For this assessment, you are required to choose a consumer with complex mental health needs. The consumer can either be a prospective (current consumer) or a retrospective (former) consumer who has a comorbid diagnosis of mental health and TWO (2) other challenges, for example, physical health, forensic, culturally and linguistically diverse consumer, alcohol and other drugs. You are also required to utilise contemporary literature to support your discussion or contentions. You are to provide a detailed background of the chosen consumer and include the background as an appendix in ISBAR format (completely de-identify the consumer). This should include their history and the main issue of concern that makes this a complex case requiring a critical clinical review.

Details of the Task/Instructions:

Choose a consumer with complex mental health needs. The consumer can either be a prospective (current consumer) or a retrospective (former consumer), using contemporary literature to demonstrate your critical thinking as well as to support your contentions, write a essay discussing contemporary mental health nursing issues.

1. Completely de-identify your consumer and discuss a mental health primary diagnosis and a minimum of two (2) comorbidities that this consumer has/had.

2. Critically evaluate how the identified mental health diagnosis (eg Schizophrenia, BPD) and comorbidities (e.g. physical health and forensic) have impacted or exacerbated consumer care.

3. Explore evidence-based treatment options for your chosen consumer and analyse how these options have promoted or impacted the care of your consumer.
