In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled (in Roe v. Wade) that a woman may choose to have an abortion until a fetus becomes viable. In June 2022 the Supreme Court overturned that decision (in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization), giving individual states the ability to regulate or ban abortion.
